Abstract

K-12 education systems worldwide are currently facing an unprecedented student mental health crisis, characterized by rising rates of anxiety, depression, and chronic stress exacerbated by socio-cultural shifts and academic pressures. Traditional academic-centric curricula often fail to address these holistic psychological needs, highlighting the urgent necessity for proactive interventions. This paper explores Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as a vital framework to mitigate the mental health crisis in K-12 settings by fostering emotional regulation, empathy, and resilience among students. This study employs a systematic literature review approach, analyzing peer-reviewed empirical studies, educational policy reports, and meta-analyses published between 2016 and 2026. The evaluation focuses on the implementation, scalability, and psychological outcomes of school-wide SEL programs, such as the CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) framework, across diverse K-12 student demographics. Findings indicate that systematic integration of SEL significantly reduces internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems while improving students' emotional well-being, classroom climate, and academic engagement. Furthermore, discussions highlight that successful SEL implementation requires comprehensive teacher professional development, institutional commitment, and culturally responsive adaptation to overcome systemic barriers and resource disparities. Social-Emotional Learning serves as an indispensable catalyst for transforming K-12 education into a supportive environment that prioritizes psychological well-being alongside academic achievement. Institutionalizing SEL is crucial for building long-term mental health resilience in post-pandemic student populations.
