Abstract

Rapid technological advancements, shifting industry demands, and the rapid pace of skill obsolescence have created a significant gap between traditional higher education degrees and the competencies required in the modern workforce. To address this mismatch, micro-credentials and digital badges have emerged as flexible, targeted, and verifiable alternatives to traditional academic qualifications. This paper employs a qualitative literature review approach, synthesizing recent academic studies, institutional case studies, and industry reports published between 2020 and 2026. The analysis examines how universities globally are integrating stackable micro-credentials into their curricula and partnering with industry stakeholders to issue blockchain-verified digital badges. The findings indicate that micro-credentials successfully enhance lifelong learning, improve graduate employability, and provide flexible pathways for non-traditional students. However, challenges persist regarding quality assurance, institutional accreditation, standardization, and employer recognition. The discussion highlights that rather than replacing traditional degrees, digital badges serve as complementary stackable modules that modularize higher education and validate discrete, practical skills. Micro-credentials and digital badges are fundamentally reshaping the higher education landscape by fostering a more agile, learner-centric, and industry-aligned ecosystem. For higher education institutions to remain relevant, they must establish rigorous internal quality frameworks and collaborate closely with industry partners to build standardized, transparent, and globally recognized credentialing systems.
